Traumatic Events: Natural disasters and catastrophic events

Being witness to events beyond one’s personal control leave us feeling powerless or helpless. The devastation and immense personal and financial losses that typically occur as a result of natural disasters and catastrophic events deeply impact and change the perception of safety and security for individuals and organizations alike. Across affected areas, and often around the world, people are anxious and uncertain about what their next steps will be.

Shepell Traumatic Event Support can provide:
  • On-site meetings with those impacted designed to normalize reaction, minimize post-traumatic stress (PTS)
  • Trauma counselling for those requiring additional support, multiple location capabilities, innovative counselling service delivery
  • Training in stress management and traumatic event response protocols for your organization including best practice disaster planning, communications and support for affected and/or displaced employees and family members
  • Expert materials and communications addressing trauma, stress, anxiety, fear, grief and aftermath coping strategies

Every situation and organization is unique. We believe Traumatic Event Support should not be dictated by geography or language. Shepell can support you with innovative trauma interventions:

  • Shepell Mobile Counselling Unit allowed hundreds of people to receive the support they needed when homes, buildings and community infrastructure in Slave Lake were destroyed by fires in 2011.
  • Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Shepell trauma counsellors were quickly deployed at an organization’s request to provide on-site management support , group and individual grief and personal counselling, and self-care expertise and electronic options. Support also included reminding participants of local resources and how to access them.
  • The death of a crew member on an offshore merchant marine vessel left those aboard feeling distressed and in need of support; in two languages, English and Russian. Through our extensive responder network, a bilingual and merchant marine experienced trauma counsellor was sent offshore to help.
